Svikiro: Meditations of an Mbira Master - Forward Kwenda (with Erica Azim)
Svikiro: Meditations of an Mbira Master - Forward Kwenda (with Erica Azim) In Zimbabwe, a savannah land of tall grasses, granite hills and acacia trees, rain is of paramount importance. The svikiro is a human keeper of a spirit which has the power to provide or withhold rain from the land. In his early teens, Forward Kwenda was selected by these rainmaking spirits to sing and play the ancient mbira dzavadzimu at ceremonies. A self-taught, intuitive musical prodigy, Forward was in constant demand to perform and record within two years of starting to play the mbira. 'When I pick up my mbira, I don't know what is going to happen..he music just goes by itself, taking me higher and higher until I can end up crying because the music is so much greater than a human being can understand.' This is the first Forward Kwenda CD; Erica Azim plays with Forward on some cuts. CD only. (Shanachie) Musicians: Forward Kwenda, Erica Azim. Tuning: Gandanga/Mavembe, Nyamaropa, Nemakonde.

The Healing Tape on CD - Tute & Palmer Chigamba 1986
The Healing Tape on CD - Tute & Palmer Chigamba 1986 One of our most popular recordings over the years...this one is so, so relaxing and tension-free. Although this performance was not specifically intended to heal, people worldwide have claimed it helped them heal from illnesses, accidents, and emotional trauma...thus the name! Hear the incredible oneness of the two interlocking mbira parts played by these brothers. As with many MBIRA recordings, this is a casual field recording, not originally intended for distribution, but the occasional child or dancer in the background does not disturb the mood. Recorded 12 April 1986 by Glenn Panna Makuna. Musicians: Tute Chigamba, Palmer Chigamba. Tuning: Gandanga/Mavembe. [Total time: 43:11]

Irene Chigamba & Erica Azim 2006: Live Mbira Concert in Berkeley, California
Irene Chigamba & Erica Azim 2006: Live Mbira Concert in Berkeley, California This rare live performance, by two of the mere handful of women performers of traditional Shona mbira music of Zimbabwe, is dedicated to the ancestral spirits of Zimbabwe, asking for an end to starvation. Mbira is very rarely played by women in Zimbabwe, but Irene Chigamba learned from her mother at the age of 8, then her father, before joining the first Zimbabwe National Dance Company and performing as a musician and dancer worldwide. Erica Azim fell in love with Shona mbira music as a teenager, and through years of determination, managed to travel to Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) in 1974 to study with several mbira masters. Vakaranga Venharetare - Live Concert in Berkeley, CA on 13 August 2008
Vakaranga Venharetare - Live Concert in Berkeley, CA on 13 August 2008 Vakaranga Venharetare means "The women who play mbira for ceremonies to call the spirits". Mbira is played by very few women in Zimbabwe, but Patience Chaitezvi and Ambuya Jenny Muchumi were both raised by women who were traditional healers and spirit mediums. In this traditional environment, they began playing mbira in ceremonies as young girls. Their relationship with mbira remains extremely traditional, and the idea of performing mbira on stage as entertainment (this live concert) was a strange experience for them! Erica Azim fell in love with Shona mbira music as a teenager, and has played since the 1970's. This recording includes both nyamaropa and mavembe (gandanga) tunings. A special treat is the magavhu (leg rattles), which can be heard on tracks 5 and 7. Recorded 13 August 2008 at Freight & Salvage, Berkeley, CA by Tesser Call. Musicians: Jenny Muchumi, Patience Chaitezvi, Erica Azim. Tuning: nyamaropa and gandanga/mavembe. [Total time: 75:48]

Beauler Dyoko & The Black Souls 1994
Beauler Dyoko & The Black Souls 1994 Hear Ambuya Beauler Dyoko and her 1994 group rock! Sadly, all members of this great group, except Dyoko, have since died of AIDS. In 1994 only, the group used an unusual tuning, similar to Katsanzaira but not as high pitched - Dorian mode in Western terms. Its fascinating to hear the group's solid vocals with the melodies subtly altered to match the tuning. The kutsinhira player used a dongonda mbira (right hand keys an octave lower than usual). We had planned to make this recording at Beauler's home, but heavy rain on the metal roof required a move to the dining room of the nearby township beer hall! Recorded 26 January 1994 at beer hall at St. Mary's, Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe by Erica Azim & Todd Boekelheide. Musicians: Beauler Dyoko, mbira and vocals; Enesiya Nyakudya, mbira and vocals; Lovett Paradzai, dongonda mbira; Evaristo Kanyemba, hosho. Tuning: Katsanzaira (though not as high pitched). Renold & Caution Shonhai 2009 Sweet, SWEET mbira and vocals on this second release of the Shonhai brothers; again, each and every track will be a favorite! From the rural Nyamweda region of Mhondoro Communal Area, the Shonhai brothers learn mbira from their great-grandfather's spirit, as well as neighboring mbira players. Caution is the medium of this spirit, which teaches younger brother Renold mbira pieces. When the spirit is no longer with Caution, Renold teaches Caution what he learned. On this recording, Caution's high floating lead vocals are perfectly balanced by Renold's lower responses. This one will be a favorite for massage sessions, or just sweetening your day. Renold & Caution Shonhai 2005
Renold & Caution Shonhai 2005 The Shonhai brothers from the Nyamweda area of Mhondoro Communal Area play a lovely mbira style, and the parts are so perfectly entwined that they sound truly one. Yet, the separation on the recording will enable mbira students to learn the parts by putting an ear to one speaker at a time. With no vocals, the high lines shine like a silver ribbon weaving through the fabric of the music. The consistent flow and volume of this one make it perfect for bedtime, massage sessions, and yoga workouts. Or, turn it up and dance! Recorded 23 May 2005. Tuning: nyamaropa. [Total time: 79:49]

9 February 1991 The late Mataure Chigamba, son of renowned mbira player Tute Chigamba, started playing marimba at the age of 7, at Kudzanayi Primary School in the Highfield area of Harare, Zimbabwe. By 6th grade, he was leading the group, and helping teacher Aberlyn Svondo to teach the others, and the group was performing at national events. Here, as a young adult, Mataure returns to his beloved primary school group, and plays together with them for this recording. On request, the group first played all the traditional songs in their repertoire, and then other songs. [Total time: 66:16]

Vashauri Vol. 1: Great Mbira Singers of Zimbabwe
Vashauri Vol. 1: Great Mbira Singers of Zimbabwe The most traditional form of singing with Zimbabwe's ancient mbira tradition is extremely improvisational, believed to be voices of spirits coming through the singers. Today, this form of singing is endangered by the influence of Western pop music, and the preference of urban audiences for pop-influenced mbira singing, which is more repetitive and much less improvisational than the original tradition. This CD is dedicated to Moses Mude (the legendary Hakurotwi's younger son), the only young mbira player who I have heard sing in the traditional way in recent years - to encourage him to continue to follow in the footsteps of the great vashauri (lead singers) among his elders. This CD includes recordings from the last 35 years, of mbira singers both past and present, some famous and some unknown. [Total time: 73:22]

    Hakurotwi Mude 1971
Hakurotwi Mude 1971 From the 1960's through his death in 2008, Hakurotwi Mude was famed as one of the greatest Shona mbira singers in living memory. When these recordings were made, Mude was perhaps in his prime as a singer and mbira player, as well as the medium of an ancient, important spirit. When Robert Garfias travelled to Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) in 1971, he heard a 45 rpm record of Mude, inquired about him at the radio station, and contact was soon made. These recordings, made in both Harare and Mhondoro, include Mude singing with his mother VaKochiwe (an important spirit medium) as she grinds maize, playing solo mbira, and playing and singing with his group, Mhuri yekwaRwizi. On track 10, Mude is possessed by his spirit and whistles. Recorded July 1971 at Harare and Mhondoro, Zimbabwe by Robert Garfias. Tuning: nyamaropa. [Total time: 72:48]

Thomas 'Sekuru Gora' Wadharwa & Tute Chigamba; Tute & Henry Chigamba - Gandanga/Mavembe Tuning Mbira 4 Feb 1991
Thomas 'Sekuru Gora' Wadharwa & Tute Chigamba; Tute & Henry Chigamba - Gandanga/Mavembe Tuning Mbira 4 Feb 1991 Thomas 'Sekuru Gora' Wadharwa was Zimbabwe’s most famous and popular mbira singer for decades, known for his soulful vocals, and often hilarious lyrics...sung with a straight face! Here, the master singer and mbira player plays with friend and master mbira player Tute Chigamba on tracks 1-7. On tracks 8-14, Chigamba plays mbira with son Henry. Chigamba’s daughter Irene adds occasional vocals on a few tracks, and plays hosho on tracks 12-14 with one hand...while nursing her 2 week old daughter, held in her other arm! Recorded by Brett Stewart. Mixed by Erica Azim. Photos by Todd Boekelheide and Julienne Battalia. Tuning: Gandanga/Mavembe. [Total time: 92:56]

Newton Gwara Solo 2002 - Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira and Vocals Newton Gwara is one of Zimbabwe's most soulful mbira vocalists, as well as an excellent mbira player. Muzanenhamo Mbira Group 2009 This group from Muzanenhamo Village in Murehwa Communal Area is a gem. "Samaita" Vitalis Botsa was Forward Kwenda's mbira partner during many formative years for both, and here plays a similar virtuosic style with oh so soulful vocals. "Samaita", a humble market gardener, is joined by two mbira players from his village, one of whom adds lovely bass vocals to some tracks. Their Nhema musasa and Mahororo serevende will be favorites! Forward Kwenda 2006 - Bass Nemakonde Tuning
Forward Kwenda 2006 - Bass Nemakonde Tuning Its almost impossible to believe that one person, playing one time, could make so much music with two thumbs and one finger! Of course, Forward Kwenda, considered by many to be the greatest living mbira player today, says that his spirits play the mbira, not him, 'How could a human being think of that?' In Zimbabwe, ancient spirits come to help the living before Kwenda can finish playing one mbira piece; thus, his mbira style is considered to be more ancient than other styles. Here, he is playing on an extremely low Nemakonde tuning mbira, a third lower than his previous Nemakonde recordings - turn up the bass on your CD player and sink into the deep sounds of Forward's musical prayers...powerful medicine... Golden Nhamo - Solo Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira 2002 with Collins Bvukubwe, hosho, and Luken Pasipamire and Samson Bvure, vocals Enjoy the very, VERY low pitch of Golden Nhamo's nyamaropa tuning mbira. Nhamo's rhythmic feel will get you snapping your fingers and tapping your toes. Pfumo jena and Mudzimu dzoka are songs more usually sung with drums, but Nhamo's low mbira versions more than do them justice. Musekiwa Chingodza & Herbert Matema 2003 Fans of Musekiwa Chingodza won't want to miss this recording, which features Chingodza and his uncle, Herbert Matema, playing soulful mbira both solo and together. Most of this recording is in mavembe (aka gandanga) tuning, but Matema plays solos in nyamaropa and nyamaropa dongonda tunings. Chingodza's lovely gentle vocals enhance many tracks, and Matema's 'old man style' vocals on his solo tracks are a typical Zimbabwean village sound...centuries ago or today. If you think you hear another percussion instrument, that is the intermittent buzzing of the bottletops on the mbiras, which has a life of its own on this recording. Tadzungaira: A Prayer to End All Suffering, Vol. 1. Forward Kwenda 1996-7 Forward Kwenda plays Tadzungaira ('We are suffering') as a prayer to the ancestors to end all suffering in the world. He is known in Zimbabwe and internationally for his incredible solo performances of this piece - an expression of all our tears, and the exaltation of the human spirit. The first three tracks were originally recorded on a cassette walkman, but captured amazing performances in casual settings. Note the use of a loose key to add extra percussion on tracks 1 and 3. Albert Zinhumwe Solo 2005 - Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira
Albert Zinhumwe Solo 2005 - Nyamaropa Tuning Mbira This musician from Mhondoro Communal Area has an interesting and elaborate solo style. AND, this one will make a great gift for that friend who doesn't appreciate the trance-inducing buzz of the bottletops...because this recording has no buzz at all. On this collection of classic mbira repertoire, some pieces are easily recognizable, while others are difficult to identify due to the solo style, which is so much more complex than the usual parts. Mandarendare Mbira Group 2005
Mandarendare Mbira Group 2005 This group from the rural Ringa Resettlement Area near Chihota, Zimbabwe, has a good groove, and features a nyamaropa dongonda mbira, played by the late Agrippa Shereni, as well as two regular nyamaropa tuning mbiras. 'Dongonda' refers to an mbira with the right hand notes an octave lower than usual, resulting in a sound reminiscent of the njari, another type of mbira, which has become rare in Zimbabwe. Tracks 3,4, and 5 feature this mbira played solo, with vocals and hosho; the other tracks include the full group, with and without vocals. The song the group is named after, Mandarendare, has a hook that will have you hearing it in your head, maybe bouncing to the beat, hours later. Musicians: Agrippa Shereni, Tinokosha Bvure and Edson Chivese, mbira and vocals; Munashe Chivese, hosho. Tuning: nyamaropa and nyamaropa dongonda. [Total time: 77:32]

Jekanyika is a rural Mhondoro Communal Area group with a relaxed tempo, confidently solid style, and typical vocals.
