The ancient traditional Shona mbira piece Shumba yaMutota has become popular in recent years in the Dewedzo area of Zimbabwe. Mutota was a 15th century Shona king. Shumba means ‘lion’ in Shona, but in the context of mbira usually refers to very ancient ancestors, the mhondoro spirits. These recordings are played in Dambatsoko tuning. [Total time: 75:27]
