Healing music and community! MBIRA Weekend Workshops are regional mini versions of Mbira Camp, each meeting twice a year. All material taught is from the Shona traditional repertoire played for centuries in Zimbabwe. All levels from first-time-to-try-it to advanced are welcome – you will be taught at your own level, and receive individual attention in addition to small group learning.
Please note that currently only those fully vaccinated for Covid may attend (at least 2 weeks after 2nd Pfizer or Moderna, or 2 weeks after Johnson & Johnson).
We’ll be testing out a a new Covid safety schedule, with mbira early in the day (9-12 and after lunch), mbira singing outdoors in the later afternoon (until 5 pm), and playing together in the evening (8-10 pm). Workshops start with an optional Friday evening session starting at 8 pm and end Sunday at 5 pm. Workshops are currently limited to 12 or less.
There is always plenty of time to practice, as needed.
Meals are included and limited sleeping bag space is provided for those from out-of-town for no additional fee (Contact Us). The following regions currently have ongoing weekend workshops:
- Northeast (Boston, MA area)
- Berkeley, California (first to restart post-pandemic!)
- Portland, OR
- Seattle, WA
- If you are interested in joining or forming a workshop group in your area, please Contact Us and let us know.
New workshop groups may be forming in other areas.
If you need an mbira (instrument) to take an MBIRA workshop, you can purchase one through MBIRA here. Or, you can borrow and/or buy an mbira at the workshop.
