Healing music and community! MBIRA Weekend Workshops are regional mini versions of Mbira Camp, each meeting twice a year. All material taught is from the Shona traditional repertoire played for centuries in Zimbabwe.
Typically, mbira singing is taught Friday and Saturday evenings (optional, 8-10 pm), and Saturday and Sunday morning (9 am-12) and afternoon (2-5 pm) sessions are devoted to mbira instruction. There is always plenty of time to practice, as needed. All levels from first-time-to-try-it to advanced are welcome – you will be taught at your own level, and receive individual attention in addition to small group learning.
Sleeping bag space is provided for those from out-of-town for no additional fee, and vegetarian meals are included. The following regions currently have ongoing weekend workshops:
- Northeast (Boston, MA area)
- Berkeley, California
- Portland, OR
- Seattle, WA
- If you are interested in joining or forming a workshop group in your area, please Contact Us and let us know.
New workshop groups may be forming in other areas.
If you need an mbira (instrument) to take an MBIRA workshop, you can purchase one through MBIRA here. Or, you can borrow and/or buy an mbira at the workshop.
