Description

The njari is a type of Shona mbira believed to have been introduced to the Buhera area of Zimbabwe from Mozambique due to the marriage of a MuNyungwe man to a local woman about 1700 A.D. The instrument was retuned to play the local music in Buhera, used to call spirits in ceremonies, and spread to other areas of Zimbabwe during subsequent centuries. This recording was made by Robert Garfias during a trip to Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia, in 1971, and features wonderful singing and hosho, as well as njari. The recording will sound familiar to some Americans, as it is the source of Dumi Maraire’s marimba arrangements titled “Ndofa ndichibaiwa.” [Total time: 74:03]
