Description

Shanje (‘Jealousy’), also known as Chandidi (‘The one I love’) and Tsikidzi nedovi (‘Tsetse fly with peanut butter’), is a traditional Shona mbira piece about jealousy between wives in a polygamous family, and is used to call female spirits. The lyrics popular in modern times (included in the CD notes) are those of the late Thomas ‘Sekuru Gora’ Wadharwa, an mbira player who was extremely popular for singing hilarious lyrics with a straight face. 12 versions of the piece, in 4 tunings, are included.
