Description

Quiet virtuoso Tute Chigamba plays in a hut in his peaceful isolated village in the Rushinga area of Zimbabwe, where he lived in 1991. Family and visitors sometimes join in with singing, clapping, dancing. Tracks 1,2, 11-18 are in gandanga (mavembe) tuning, played with son Garadziva, already an accomplished mbira player at age 16. Track 3 is played with Erica Azim, proving to the visitors that the ‘murungu’ could play, too – this was only the second ever visit by foreigners to the village. Tracks 4-10 are solos in “MBIRA workshop pitch” (around B) nyamaropa tuning, the tuning the Chigamba family first played. [Total time: 81:00]
