Description
From the 1960’s through his death in 2008, Hakurotwi Mude was famed as one of the greatest Shona mbira singers in living memory. When these recordings were made, Mude was perhaps in his prime as a singer and mbira player, as well as the medium of an ancient, important spirit. When Robert Garfias travelled to Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) in 1971, he heard a 45 rpm record of Mude, inquired about him at the radio station, and contact was soon made. These recordings, made in both Harare and Mhondoro, include Mude singing with his mother VaKochiwe (an important spirit medium) as she grinds maize, playing solo mbira, and playing and singing with his group, Mhuri yekwaRwizi. On track 10, Mude is possessed by his spirit and whistles. [Total time: 72:48]
